Who is Val McDermid?

Sometimes dubbed the Queen of Crime, Val McDermid grew up in Kirkcaldy on the East Coast of Scotland in a working class family. She was accepted to read English at St Hilda’s College, Oxford – at 17 before becoming a journalist. After two years of training in Devon, she worked fourteen years on national newspapers in Glasgow and Manchester.

She wrote a first book at 21, but it has not been published. Instead, the story became a play. She continued to write and find her first success with Report for Murder: The First Lindsay Gordon Mystery.

The rest is history as Val McDermis sold more than 17 millions books across the glob and is translated into more than 40 languages.

Who is Will Lee?

Chances are, you know who is Stone Barrington. But it’s not with the former detective now lawyer that writer Stuart Woods launched his career as a writer. His first novel, Chiefs, was published in March 1981 and stars Will Henry Lee, then a police chief in Georgia. The story was inspired by the police chief’s badge belonged to his grandfather that he found stained with blood and pockmarked by buckshot. His grandfather died wearing it 10 years before Woods was born.

Chiefs was followed by Run Before the Wind, a semi-sequel that take place 10 years after the events of chief and launched the series that continues the story of the Lee family and more specifically the life of Will Lee (the son of Will Lee, the attorney in Chiefs) as he climbs the political ladder.

Who is Colson Whitehead?

Arch Colson Chipp Whitehead is an American author mostly known for his fiction novels—but he also published non-fiction books, essays and short stories in The New Yorker. After graduating from Harvard University in 1991, he started working for The Village Voice. During that time, he began drafting his first novels. 

In 2002, he received a MacArthur Genius Grant, won two Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (in 2017 and 2020), the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction, and a lot more. The most famous and celebrated books written Colson Whitehead are The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys.
