Magic Tree House Books in Order: How to read Mary Pope Osborne’s series?

Magic Tree House is an American series of children’s books written by the American author Mary Pope Osborne and illustrated by Salvatore Murdocca until 2016, after which AG Ford took over.

This is the story of Jack and Annie Smith, two normal children from the fictional small town of Frog Creek, Pennsylvania, who are sent on missions through time by Morgan Le Fay (then by Merlin) with the help of a magical tree house.

How to read the Magic Tree House Books in Order?

After book #28, Mary Pope Osborne made a change to the story, which led to the “Merlin Missions” (Merlin the Magician took over for Morgan Le Fay) that were written for more advanced readers, before going back – after a decade – to the old format. In the following list, the two series are separated. The regular Magic Tree House books for the younger reader first, then the Magic Tree House: Merlin Missions books.

The books of the Magic Tree House series can be read as standalone.

  3. Sunset of the Sabertooth – The Ice Age is very cool…for two kids in bathing suits! Jack and Annie nearly freeze when the Magic Tree House whisks them back to the time of cave people and woolly mammoths. But nothing can stop them from having another wild adventure-not even a saber-toothed tiger!
  4. Midnight on the Moon – Three …two…one…BLAST OFF! The Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie off to the moon-and the future. Their mission? To find the last “M” thing that will free Morgan from the spell. Can they do it before the air in their oxygen tank runs out? Will the mysterious moon man help them? And why is Peanut the mouse acting so strange?

  4. Hour of the Olympics – No girls allowed at the Olympic Games! That’s the rule when the Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie back to ancient Greece. But when Annie tells jack to go to the games without her, he knows she’s up to something. Will Annie find a way to see the games? Or will she get herself-and Jack-into Olympic-size trouble? As frightening as that sounds, the mission is clear: find the ghost and save the world. But what does all this have to do with a mountain, an old man, and a snow leopard? The journey is dangerous and the path uncertain, but Jack and Annie can do this — they’re the only ones who can!

Jack and Annie are going to need a little bit of magic for this mission!

Time of the Turtle King – It’s just a regular day when ordinary kids Jack and Annie are whisked away in the magic tree house to the Galapagos islands, where they must save a sea turtle from an erupting volcano! But what do Jack and Annie know about saving a sea turtle?! Plenty, thanks to some magic that makes them experts. A helicopter ride, rushing lava, and a whole lot of determination make this one adventure Jack and Annie will never forget!

Magic Tree House: Merlin Missions

Launched after High Tide in Hawaii (#28), the Magic Tree House: Merlin Missions books were written for more advanced readers. They were originally numbered from #29 to 55, but are now available in a separate series

Christmas in Camelot – When Jack and Annie receive an invitation to spend Christmas Eve in Camelot-a magical place that exists only in myth and fantasy-they know they are in for their biggest adventure yet.
