Written by the American author and former attorney Steve Berry, the Cotton Malone series is about Cotton Malone (of course), a one-time top operative with the Magellan Billet, a division inside the U.S. Justice Department.

After leaving the Billet, Cotton Malone moved to Amsterdam and purchased an old and rare bookstore. From time to time, he will be called back by his old boss at the Billet to assist in various investigations. There’s also a spin-off that revolves around the character of Cassiopeia Vitt. More about that in our article about the Cassiopeia Vitt Adventures.

A place he could retreat into and rule as he wished. But a question remains: did he succeed? After many months, Cotton Malone’s protégé, Luke Daniels, has managed to infiltrate a renegade group intent on winning Bavarian independence from Germany. Daniels has also managed to gain the trust of the prince of Bavaria, a frustrated second son intent on eliminating his brother, the duke, and restoring the Wittelsbach monarchy, only now with him as king. Everything hinges on a 19th-century deed that proves that Ludwig’s long-rumored search bore fruit–legal title to lands that Germany, China, and the United States all now want, only for vastly different reasons.
